Alsop’s Devon

66 Fore Street, Kingsbridge, TQ7 1PP

Our Story

We weren’t looking for a new restaurant. We were on holiday when we saw the site. Initially drawn in by original features such as the windows and spiral staircase, we went to the estate agent hoping to get a look around just so we had something to talk about over lunch.

The location had been sat empty for years after being a clothes shop, and the more time we spent there the more we realised the potential of the Grade 2 listed building to become a premier dining destination.

Our philosophy is that great produce creates great food. Alsop’s will be a 50 cover restaurant with an open kitchen where you’ll be able to see the Chefs preparing your plates.

Eventually the site will include a private dining area, garden bar, wine cellar and ensuite bedrooms, making Alsop’s a place for all occasions.

Progress so far

Cornishman Fred Alsop was born in Looe in 1995 and grew up with his parents running a fish wholesale business supplying fine-dining chefs and restaurants across the UK. From an early age, he accompanied his father on delivery routes to professional kitchens, gaining early insight into produce, sourcing and chef culture that later led him to step away from the family business and into chef roles of his own.

During lockdown, he began his first solo venture in hospitality, preparing seafood platters and meal deliveries from his mother’s café on Looe harbour. The site was subsequently passed to him and relaunched as The Fish Market in April 2021. Over the past five years, the restaurant has become a recognised destination with a strong local following for confident, produce-led seafood cooking in a relaxed coastal setting.
